Could Cilantro Be the Answer to Food-Borne Bullies?
Ive been following the slew of food-borne drama disasters that have spread like wild fire this year. Recalls seem to be getting bigger and much more dangerous. The rise of the antibiotic resistant superbugs has made problems even worse. But what if scientists were investigating a strikingly natural cure for the problem in the form of cilantro? Thats right, researchers are testing whether seeds from the coriander plant, more commonly known as cilantro, have serious antibacterial qualities.
According to ,
A new study suggests that oil from the seeds of coriander the green herb that’s more commonly known as cilantro may be able to wipe out a broad range of harmful bacteria, including drug-resistant bugs and those that commonly cause food poisoning.
Lab tests showed that coriander oil killed or slowed the growth of 12 bacteria strains including salmonella, e coli, and MRSA.
Again, :
“[C]oriander oil damages the membrane surrounding the bacterial cell. This disrupts the barrier between the cell and its environment and inhibits essential processes including respiration, which ultimately leads to death of the bacterial cell,” said Domingues in a statement.
While were far away from applications, this is good news. This isnt the first indication that natural agents such as coriander can have real time impact on deadly bacteria. A study published in the has found that thyme could be used to stop the spread of MRSA. And thus far thyme has shown no adverse side effects. The MRSA infection is more commonly known as “staph” but it stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
In the fight to contain food borne illness, this is one check for the good guys.
