The infection known as flesh-eating bacteria syndrome is known scientifically as hecrotizing fasciitis (NF). It is a rare infection of the deeper layers of skin and subcutaneous tissues.

LSU Health Sciences Center doctor and Orthapedic Surgery resident Dr. Russel R. Russo, MD and his colleagues published the case report online in the journal Orthopedics. The unnamed woman first presented to doctors with pain in her forearm. She did not report of any other symptoms, but it was noted that there was a small puncture wound on her arm, one with surrounding redness.

Doctors treated her with a broad spectrum of intravenous antibiotics.

Angelina Jolie attended the Palm Springs Film Festival over the weekend and told the reporters that she hopes her kids will see the world for the big melting pot that it is, and not just as the tiny blip of Hollywood.  Angelina also shared a bit about daughter Zaharas birthday (she turned 7 on Sunday, January 8th).

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) — Problems in how people with dyslexia process the sounds they hear may be at the heart of this learning disorder, new research suggests.

The study findings, published in the Dec. 22 issue of the journal Neuron, may one day lead to better therapies for children and adults who are diagnosed with this common yet still ultimately mysterious condition.

And different people with dyslexia may have differences in brain-processing patterns, which could help distinguish subtypes of the disorder.

Dyslexia affects about 5 percent of school-aged children.

ADA and The Lancet Announce a Call for Diabetes Papers  

In Collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, The Lancet will be publishing a fourth theme issue dedicated to diabetes care and research. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their research at a special ADA/The Lancet Symposium during the American Diabetes Association’s 72nd Scientific Sessions, June 8-12, 2012 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Lancet invites submissions of high-quality original research on any aspect of diabetes. Priority will be given to randomized trials that advance the evidence base relevant to treatment and prevention of diabetes, but any studies that have the potential to change clinical practice are welcome.
