Poop prevalent in public swimming pools

There’s poop in public pools, according to a new report.   Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found genetic material from bacteria in 58 percent of public pools they tested during the summer of 2012.   This shows that “swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools,” which could spread germs to other people, the researchers wrote in their report. bacteria are normally found in the human gut and feces.   They also found genetic material from bacteria called , whichcan cause skin rashes and ear infections, in 59 percent of pools.   The fecal material in pools comes from swimmers not showering before getting into the water, and from incidents of defecation in pools, according to the report. New risk assessment scorecard helps physicians prevent blood clots in patients following childbirth

A new risk assessment scorecard helped physicians significantly improve their ability to identify at-risk patients following childbirth and provide preventive treatment options for life-threatening blood clots, according to a study conducted by researchers at Montefiore Medical Center. At-risk patients with completed scorecards were 2.6 times more likely to receive preventive treatment to reduce serious clots, known as venous thromboembolisms (VTEs), than those who did not. The data were presented today in New Orleans at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

This study included three phases – the initial one evaluated completion of the scorecard in 140 patients followed by a two-month campaign to educate doctors about using the scorecard and then a second evaluation of 133 patients.

According to Consumer Reports, tests carried out on ground turkey samples obtained from retail stores nationwide gave alarming results: “Some bacteria that end up on ground turkey, including E. coli and staph aureus, can cause not only food poisoning but also urinary, bloodstream, and other infections.” Consumer Reports said it tested 257 retail samples of 27 brands of ground turkey and patties from 21 states and found that more than half were contaminated with fecal bacteria, more than 90% tested positive for one or more of the bacteria for which the magazine tested, including Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, E.
