At-Home Blood Pressure Monitoring Helps to Spot Cognitive Decline

At-home (ambulatory) blood pressure monitoring is a readily accessible method for health assessment.  William B. White, from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (Connecticut, USA), and colleagues, evaluated 72 men and women, ages 75 to 89 years, who underwent 24-hour at-home blood pressure monitoring.  The process revealed statistically significant white matter hyperintensities – lesions of the brain associated with cognitive decline – as compared with clinic blood pressure measurements.  Further, the changes in home blood pressure monitoring were more closely associated with changes in functional parameters, including nonsignificant changes for walking time, and tests that measured the speed of visual search, attention, mental flexibility, and motor function. I just received an action alert from the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), and it turns out that Monsanto Roundup, the fertilizer linked to plant diseases and superweeds, is up for a registration review. According to the OCA:

    Botulism is a rare but extremely serious illness thats caused by eating foods contaminated with the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. The severe poison can also be contracted though open wounds, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

    Theres fear of botulism in certain foods including hot dogs and thats why theyre treated with nitrites and nitrates, but the most common occurrences happen in preserved and canned foods, such as home canned vegetables, cured pork, and smoked or raw fish. Its common in babies and most of the average 110 U.S. cases are in babies, often from eating improperly handled honey.

    ADA and The Lancet Announce a Call for Diabetes Papers  

    In Collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, The Lancet will be publishing a fourth theme issue dedicated to diabetes care and research. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their research at a special ADA/The Lancet Symposium during the American Diabetes Association’s 72nd Scientific Sessions, June 8-12, 2012 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Lancet invites submissions of high-quality original research on any aspect of diabetes. Priority will be given to randomized trials that advance the evidence base relevant to treatment and prevention of diabetes, but any studies that have the potential to change clinical practice are welcome.
